"Features edgy bay leaf and savory notes around a core of dense blackberry and fig fruit, while a chalky spine pins down the finish. Shows range and drive. Best from 2016 through 2025. 1,000 cases made."

"The 2012 Calluna Estate from Chalk Hill is a blend of 59% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc and the rest Petit Verdot and Malbec. An elegant and beautiful wine with a deep ruby/purple color, Bordeaux-like minerality, crème de cassis, licorice, earth and spice. The tannins are sweet, the wine medium to full-bodied, complex and supple. This is a beauty that should drink well for 15-20 years. Impressive."

"Its ruby opaque color is followed by complex notes of garrigue, leather, plums and violets. Medium to full-bodied, elegant and layered, with a great texture, this fruit-forward, balanced Roussillon is already hard to resist, but will continue drinking nicely for 6-7 years"

"A plush and generous blend that also shows excellent structure and focus. Brooding dark boysenberry and smoky mocha aromas combine with layered flavors of blackberry, graphite, nutmeg and brown spice. The tannins are burly, but ripe and fleshy. Syrah, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Drink now through 2027. 1,300 cases made."

"This killer wine has an inky purple color and offers notes of espresso roast intermixed with white chocolate, creme de cassis, blackberry and a touch of toasty oak. The wine was aged 16 months in French oak, of which 40% was new. Broad and opulent, with great intensity, purity and depth, this is another stunner from Dave Phinney, a.k.a. Orin Swift."

"This wine is supple, layered and expressive in the glass. Dark red cherry, spice, plum and menthol flesh out in an open, resonant Cabernet Sauvignon that captures the immediacy and raciness of the vintage. Floral notes add a measure of brightness as the wine opens up, but this remains an especially dark Cabernet Sauvignon."

"In re-tasting the 2010 Basalt Block alongside its 2011 counterpart, I was struck by the hints of game and tobacco that were emerging on top of characteristics noted in my Issue 202 report, as well as by a slightly more pliable feel to its tannins than before; but Brittan’s 2010 Pinot Noir Gestalt Block had now clearly pulled away from its immediate sibling in clarity and complexity, with a floral dimension suggestive of wisteria and buddleia alluringly emerging inner-mouth amid crunchy black raspberry as well as on the nose; and the savory mineral salts to which I drew notice last time now leading to an even juicier, more mouthwatering, but no less ineradicable or invigorating finish. I continue to anticipate this showing well through at least 2022. "
